Andrew E. Sattler, known as Andy to his friends, colleagues and clients, is the managing member of Sattler & Dwyre, PLLC. Having a markedly different background from most lawyers, he is a scientist and chose law as his second career having first practiced as a research chemist.
Andy has practiced in the area of civil law with an emphasis on consumer law, insurance law, and contract law since 2002 but has practiced in many other areas of civil law over that time period within the area of civil trial. He is not certified by in any area of law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
Andy received his legal education from St. Mary’s University School of Law wherein he graduated with a juris doctor in the top 5% of his class earning the distinction of Magna Cum Laude. He was a member of the honor fraternity Phi Delta Phi and was also a member of the John M. Harlan Society. During the summer of 2000, he was chosen for a law clerk internship with the honorable Edward Prado at the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, San Antonio Division.
Andy was admitted to the State bar of Texas in November of 2001 and passing the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Bar, became registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office in April of 2002.
Andy has been involved in the Consumer & Commercial Law Section of the State Bar of Texas since 2004 and has served on the Consumer & Commercial Law Council in various positions for 12 years, including chairperson, treasurer, and secretary. He has authored papers and spoken at numerous Advanced Consumer & Commercial Law Continuing Legal Education Seminars on various consumer law topics, including:
Nuts & Bolts of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act(DTPA),
Executory Contracts in Residential Real Estate,
DTPA Tie-In Statutes, and
DTPA Tie-In Standing Requirements Enhancing Damages under the DTPA.
In 2011 Andy gave the Consumer Law Update at the State Bar College. He published the article Consumer Status and Tie-in Statutes Under the DTPA- Or A Claimant’s Right to Sue Under the DTPA in the Fall 2012 Journal of Consumer and Commercial Law.
Andy has a Bachelor’s of Science with a major in chemistry and a minor in computer science from the University of Texas Pan American. He was named an Outstanding Senior Chemist by the American Institute of Chemists and was a Welch Research Fellowship recipient during his undergraduate studies. Additionally, he earned the J. Elliot Scholarship for academic excellence and was the instructor for a number of chemistry labs while an undergraduate student, including organic chemistry and biochemistry.
After graduation, Andy worked with Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service in conjunction with the U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service before relocating to San Antonio to become a research scientist at Southwest Research Institute wherein he worked with the detection, isolation and quantification various radio-nuclides. This work encompassed both wet chemistry isolation techniques and the use and maintenance of various high-tech detection instruments, including a multi-channel alpha spectrometer, intrinsic germanium gamma detector, liquid scintillation counter, gross alpha/beta detector and other devices. He also served as a divisional radiation safety officer and as a member of the Institute’s radiation safety council.
Andy has lived in the San Antonio area for over 30 years and has strong ties to the community. He lives with his wife Marina, an elementary school teacher, and their 2 pugs. Andy and Marina have three grown daughters.
